Bright Ideas: Gluten-Free Father’s Day

Whether Dad is celiac or the doting father of a gluten-free household, he deserves to be toasted in wheat-free style this Father’s Day!
And of course, you can just consider us the butter for that toast…‘cause we’re on a roll.

See what we did there? #DadJoke

Below, find a bevy of recipes, gift guides and DIY ideas that tickled our fancy. We think you’ll like them too.

Does Dad love dinner? Who doesn’t!

Preparing a thoughtful, home-cooked meal is the surest way to anyone’s heart. And if you show him you carefully chose some of the best gluten-free dishes around…well, we’ll go ahead and prepare the winner’s circle, because it’s pretty much guaranteed you’ll crush Father’s Day.

The Stir put together a savory and simple menu for the gluten-free dad, including dessert! It includes pulled pork, sweet potato mash with chipotle and honey, kale salad and peanut butter-chocolate ice cream. What’ not to love? Find the full write-up right here.

If you’d rather have a little more creative control over your menu, check out this round-up of recipes on the healthy side from The Healthy Apple. From fresh appetizers like sweet corn and jalapeno hummus, to homemade veggie burgers, it’s got every base covered. That said, it’s a lot of side dishes – but if grilling is what you have in mind for the main course, this list is tops for pairing with barbecued fare.

Of course, if you see this as an opportunity to treat his sweet tooth, we approve. Go all in! Nothing says “thanks for everything, Pops” quite like vanilla pudding with sauteed pears, right? Real Simple’s article on 30 Delicious Gluten-Free Desserts is diverse enough to please any palate. Plus, it gives you the opportunity to get creative in the kitchen and put a few more notches in that wheat-free cooking belt. That said, if Dad is the cook of the house, try putting together some cute homemade oatmeal cookie mix in cute jars using our gluten-free oats!

Before we move on, put the final feather in his Father’s Day cap with some smartly chosen libations. The Beer Diaries reviewed and ranked a variety of gluten-free beers. Think ahead and order a few for him to enjoy with his meal! Adding an element of food-pairing excitement has a way of making a meal feel extra special.

Okay, so maybe you aren’t an ace in the kitchen.

If you can’t chop, dice or sautée to save your life, don’t worry. You can still please a father with a foodie side. This gift guide from Gluten Free Living includes some pretty impressive mail-order fare. There are hand-cut cookies, gluten-free lobster mac ‘n’ cheese, and a brew-your-own gluten-free beer kit. Even if you don’t find something on it for him, you might walk away with a portable briefcase grill or two.

So, that said – as great as a well-chosen, store-bought gift can be – you may prefer to show your love DIY style. Brit + Co’s compilation of projects includes tripod lamps, home-bottled cocktails, soaps, and a cute Father’s Day advent calendar. There are 40 ideas total, instructions included – but fair warning, it’s peppered with some less-than-gluten-free recipes. Read carefully.

If you can get your hands on some nicer supplies – like wood, leather and slate stone coasters – there’s also this great list of 24 DIY Father’s Day Gifts He’ll Actually Want (we’re partial to the cookbook stand).

Want to skip handmade and get outside?

We get it. Depending on what you do, choosing an activity may be the most cost-effective option for you. And, if Dad’s love language is quality time, this is definitely a winner.

A great place to start is think of your father’s/husband’s favorite hobbies and do them together. Go to a baseball game, try mini-golf,
pack a picnic and go on a hike. To get inspired and jog your memory, check out this list of suggestions.

You can also keep it close to home (looking at you, parents of young kids) by putting together a scavenger hunt for him. Leaving clues that
are specific to him will make Dad feel special, and you can engage the little guys in hiding them. To jumpstart you, The Modern Mommy put this example together, including the printable clues she used for her own husband.

Finishing touches…

Whatever you decide to gift him with – time, attention, grilled meats – round it out in picture-perfect style with these cute printables, kid’s crafts and gift-wrap ideas. They’re especially handy if your kiddos aren’t old enough to help out in the kitchen, or with a hand-hewn Wood Cut Letter Holder…

So…what are you waiting for? There’s a super-cool, ultra-rad guy in your life who deserves a little gluten-free TLC!
