Bastille Day: Vive Sans Gluten!

It’s the season for Red, White and Blue! After the Fourth, don’t ditch your patriotic decor. Have a backyard soiree again on July 14th – Bastille Day!

A quick history for those who don’t know: Bastille Day is a celebration of the storming of the Bastille in Paris (a prison and symbol of the monarchy) thus marking the start of the French Revolution. Basically, it’s Independence Day, round deux.

Who can pass that up? Surprise your family with some festive fare to start the day, or go big by inviting a few friends over to make a special evening of it. Whether you’re celebrating your heritage or just looking for a little summer fun, let’s (gluten-free) go for it.

Bastille Brunch

If you want to dip your toes in the pool but don’t want to commit an entire day to la révolution, have a little fun in the morning by putting a European twist on breakfast! These oat-based recipes are sweet, and can be made gluten-free using our certified oats:

You can dress things up with this cute, printable mini-bunting and then work your treats off in the backyard afterwards with a few rounds of French bocce ball – Pétanque!

An Evening Fête

Wine Enthusiast put together a short, but inspiring how-to on throwing a Bastille Day shindig, including music recommendations and a signature cocktail made with aromatic liqueurs, gin and bubbles.

They suggest fondue as a classic go-to, but if you want something a little less dairy-rich than typical French-inspired fare, we put together a menu with a few of our favorite recipes.

Draw your party out from afternoon and into evening – the très European way – by starting with a hearty first course: a gorgeous niçoise salad that begs to be served outside. This recipe hits all the high points including olives, haricot verts, hard-boiled eggs and tuna – plus some surprise (purple) additions!

For the main course, go in-season with an overflowing, group-friendly pot of steamed mussels. It’s not only beautifully communal, but perfect for customizing with your choice of simmering sauces. If you’ve had mussels before, you might mourn the traditional side of crusty baguette. But luckily, there’s a deliciously nutty alternative you can soak up all that sauce with in this naturally gluten-free Chickpea Flatbread.
